Things to Know When Traveling Back to Florida

Traveling back to Florida? Stop into Myerlee Pharmacy today to pick up a BinaxNOW™ Covid-19 Ag Card Home Test kit before traveling. BinaxNOW™ Covid-19 Ag Card Home Test is a virtually guided COVID-19 antigen test that provides rapid and verifiable results in the safety and convenience of your home.

The US government requires all air travelers arriving in the United States from other countries to be tested for COVID-19 no more than 3 days before flight departure and to present negative test results or documentation showing the individual has recovered from COVID-19 to the airline before boarding the flight. Air passengers are also required to confirm the information they present is true by signing an attestation. This order applies to all passengers 2 years of age or older, whether or not they are US citizens. Before Traveling Before traveling, consider the following:
  • Is Covid-19 spreading at the destination?
The more cases there are at the destination, the more likely infection is.
  • Do you live with someone who might be at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19?
If you get infected while traveling, you can spread the virus to loved ones when you return, even without symptoms.
  • Are you at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19?
Anyone can get ill from the virus that causes COVID-19, but older adults and people with certain underlying medical conditions are at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • Does your destination have requirements or restrictions for travelers?
Some state, local, and territorial governments have requirements, such as requiring people to wear masks and requiring those who recently traveled to quarantine for up to 14 days.
When Traveling When traveling, take steps to protect yourself and others from COVID-19:
  • Avoid close contact by staying at least 6 feet apart (about 2 arms’ length) from anyone not from your household.
  • Avoid contact with anyone who is sick.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.
  • Wash hands often or use hand sanitizer (with at least 60% alcohol).
  • Wear a mask and keep the nose and mouth covered when in public settings.
Traveling to Florida The Florida Department of Health has issued the following Public Health Advisory:
  • Residents and visitors are advised to wear face coverings if social distancing is not possible, both indoors and outdoors.
  • Avoid closed spaces, crowded places, and close-contact settings.
  • COVID-19 is contractable during travel. You may feel well and not experience symptoms, but still spread COVID-19 to others.
  • Travel increases chances of getting and spreading COVID-19. Don’t travel if you are sick or if you have been around someone with COVID-19 in the past 14 days. Don’t travel with someone who is sick.
Domestic Travel The COVID-19 outbreak in the United States is a rapidly evolving circumstance. The status of the outbreak varies by location. State, local, and territorial governments may have travel restrictions in place, including testing requirements, stay-at-home orders, and quarantine requirements upon arrival. Guidance and travel restrictions are updated frequently. International Travel The COVID-19 pandemic continues to affect countries differently. Challenges to any international travel at this time may include mandatory quarantines, travel restrictions, and closed borders. Foreign governments may implement restrictions with little notice, even in destinations that were previously low risk. If you choose to travel internationally, your trip may be severely disrupted, and it may be difficult to arrange travel back to the United States.

Myths and Facts about COVID-19 Vaccines in Fort Myers, FL

COVID-19 Vaccine Facts and Myths | Myerlee Pharmacy

The facts of today may not be the truths of tomorrow as information surrounding this pandemic changes every day. Accurate COVID-19 vaccine information is critical and can help prevent common myths from spreading. When deciding whether or not to get the vaccine, follow the advice given by your healthcare provider, your national and local public health authority.

1. Vaccines

MYTH: Researchers rushed the development of the COVID-19 vaccine, so its effectiveness and safety cannot be trusted. FACT: Studies found that the two initial vaccines are about 95% effective with no serious or life-threatening side effects reported. The COVID-19 vaccine could be developed quickly for several reasons:
  • The COVID-19 vaccines from Johnson & Johnson and Moderna were created with a method that has been in development for years, so the companies could start the vaccine development process early in the pandemic.
  • Vaccine developers didn’t skip any testing steps but conducted some of the steps on an overlapping schedule to gather data faster.
  • Vaccine projects had plenty of resources, as governments invested in research and/or paid for vaccines in advance.
  • Some types of COVID-19 vaccines were created using messenger RNA (mRNA), which allows a faster approach than the traditional way that vaccines are made.
  • Social media helped companies find and engage study volunteers who were willing to help with COVID-19 vaccine research.
  • Because COVID-19 is so contagious and widespread, it did not take long to see if the vaccine worked for the study volunteers who were vaccinated.
  • Companies began making vaccines early in the process — even before FDA authorization — so some supplies were ready when authorization occurred.
MYTH: COVID-19 vaccines are not safe.
FACT:
The COVID-19 vaccines currently in use have all been through rigorous testing and approval procedures to ensure they are safe and effective. MYTH: If I’ve already had COVID-19, I don’t need a vaccine.
FACT: People who have gotten sick with COVID-19 may still benefit from getting vaccinated. Due to the severe health risks associated with COVID-19 and the fact that re-infection with COVID-19 is possible, people may be advised to get a COVID-19 vaccine even if they have already been sick with COVID-19.

2. Symptoms and Severity

MYTH: Most people who contract COVID-19 get very sick or die. FACT: Most people who get COVID-19 suffer a mild form of the illness and will be able to recover at home, without hospital treatment. Stay home and call your local health authority for advice if you have any symptoms of COVID-19 including difficulty breathing, persistent chest pain, or loss of speech or mobility.
MYTH: You can always tell if someone has COVID-19.
FACT:
The virus that causes COVID-19 can be in the body for up to 14 days before symptoms appear. Some people will have such mild cases of COVID-19 that they might not have any symptoms.

You can still pass COVID-19 without symptoms. It is important that everyone follows the prevention advice such as social distancing, wearing a face mask, and regularly washing hands even if they feel healthy.

3. Risks

MYTH: COVID-19 only affects certain demographics.
FACT:
Anyone can get COVID-19, regardless of demographics. COVID-19 has affected people from all over the world, including people of all backgrounds, races, ages, and financial statuses.
MYTH: COVID-19 only affects the elderly.
FACT:
While COVID-19 can be more dangerous in older people, anyone can contract it including young people, some of whom become seriously ill. While we don’t yet fully understand why some people suffer more serious symptoms, we do know that young people with certain underlying health conditions including obesity, diabetes, cancer, or high blood pressure are more likely to develop serious symptoms.
MYTH: The COVID-19 vaccine can affect women’s fertility.
FACT: The COVID-19 vaccine will not affect fertility. The truth is that the COVID-19 vaccine encourages the body to create copies of the spike protein found on the coronavirus’s surface. This “teaches” the body’s immune system to fight the virus that has the specific spike protein on it.

4. Prevention, Treatment, and Cures

MYTH: Drugs used in antiretroviral treatment for HIV are effective against COVID-19. FACT: There is currently no evidence that antiretroviral drugs used in HIV treatments can treat or prevent COVID-19. If you’re living with HIV, continue taking antiretroviral treatment to protect your immune system. Follow the general prevention advice for COVID-19, as there’s no evidence that antiretroviral treatment for HIV provides any immunity to COVID-19.

MYTH: Anti-malaria drugs are effective against COVID-19.
FACT:
There’s currently no evidence that antimalarial drugs treat or prevent COVID. The main clinical trial searching for effective COVID-19 treatment with the anti-malarial drug, hydroxychloroquine concluded after it found no evidence linking the drug to faster recoveries or ventilation and death prevention.

MYTH: Hot beverages stop COVID-19.
FACT:
There is no drink, hot or cold, that will protect against or cures coronavirus. Most people who get COVID-19 recover by themselves. Taking paracetamol, drinking increased liquids and resting helps manage symptoms. MYTH: Strong disinfectants protect against COVID-19. FACT: Strong disinfectants should not be used to clean the body. Thoroughly washing hands with soap and water or using an alcohol-based sanitizer will stop the virus from being passed on. Using stronger chemicals on the skin can be dangerous. Never drink disinfectant or hand sanitizer as this can cause serious damage.

MYTH: Drinking alcohol cures or prevents COVID-19.
FACT:
Drinking alcohol doesn’t cure or prevent COVID-19. In fact, drinking alcohol can weaken the immune system. It’s recommended that adults limit alcohol intake to stay healthy. Drinking high-strength ethanol found in some cleaning products will not protect you from COVID-19 and instead could cause disability or death. COVID-19 vaccines are now available at Myerlee Pharmacy Clinic.

Benefits of Getting a COVID-19 Vaccine

Vaccines reduce the burden on our health care system by reducing the number of people who get COVID-19. It’s been long-touted that between 70 to 85% of the population will need to be vaccinated for us to reach herd immunity against COVID-19. Just over 100 million Americans aged 18 and older about 40 percent of adults are now fully vaccinated. We need to get that number much higher. If you or a loved one haven’t yet been vaccinated, please consider doing so. It will help to save lives and bring this pandemic to an end.

1. Johnson & Johnson COVID-19 Vaccine

  • Results of a 44,000-person global clinical trial showed the vaccine to be 67% effective against moderate-to-severe COVID-19 at 14 days after being vaccinated and 66% effective at 28 days after vaccination.
  • Against severe COVID-19, the vaccine was found to be 77% effective at 14 days after vaccination and 85% at 28 days after vaccination.
  • U.S. regulators announced that Johnson & Johnson's Covid-19 vaccine being developed by its subsidiary Janssen Pharmaceuticals is effective at preventing moderate to severe cases of the disease.
  • Require fewer medical personnel and should speed up the pace of the vaccination campaign considerably.

Benefits of COVID-19 Vaccine

COVID-19 vaccination will help keep you from getting COVID-19
  • All COVID-19 vaccines currently available in the United States have been shown to be safe and effective at preventing COVID-19.
  • All COVID-19 vaccines that are in development are being carefully evaluated in clinical trials and will be authorized or approved only if they make it substantially less likely you will get COVID-19.
  • Getting vaccinated yourself may also protect people around you, particularly people at increased risk for severe illness from COVID-19.
  • Experts continue to conduct studies to learn more about how COVID-19 vaccination may reduce the spread of the virus that causes COVID-19.
Sources:
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/different-vaccines.html
https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/effectiveness.html

Once you are fully vaccinated, you can start doing more

  • After fully vaccinated for COVID-19, you may be able to start doing some things that you stopped doing because of the pandemic.
  • People are not considered fully vaccinated until two weeks after their second dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech or Moderna COVID-19 vaccine, or two weeks after a single-dose Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen COVID-19 vaccine. You should keep using all the tools available to protect yourself and others until you are fully vaccinated.
Source: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/fully-vaccinated.html

COVID-19 vaccination is a safer way to help build protection
  • COVID-19 can have serious, life-threatening complications, and there is no way to know how COVID-19 will affect you.
  • Clinical trials for all vaccines must first show they are safe and effective before any vaccine can be authorized or approved for use, including COVID-19 vaccines. The known and potential benefits of a COVID-19 vaccine must outweigh the known and potential risks of the vaccine before it is used under what is known as an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA).
  • Both natural immunity and immunity produced by a vaccine are important parts of COVID-19 disease that experts are trying to learn more about, and CDC will keep the public informed as new evidence becomes available.

COVID-19 vaccination will be an important tool to help stop the pandemic
  • Vaccines will work with your immune system so it will be ready to fight the virus if you are exposed.
  • A growing body of evidence suggests that fully vaccinated people are less likely to be infected without showing symptoms (called asymptomatic infection) and potentially less likely to spread the virus that causes COVID-19 to others.
COVID-19 vaccines are safe and effective
  • While more COVID-19 vaccines are being developed as quickly as possible, routine processes and procedures remain in place to ensure the safety of any vaccine that is authorized or approved for use.
  • Safety is a top priority, and there are many reasons to get vaccinated.
Source: https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-ncov/vaccines/distributing/steps-ensure-safety.html
The COVID-19 vaccines (Johnson & Johnson and Moderna) are safe and effective. They do not contain live viruses so they cannot give you COVID-19. Moderna uses messenger RNA (mRNA) from the genetic code of COVID-19’s spike protein. Johnson & Johnson uses viral vector technology, which uses a harmless version of a virus to deliver important instructions to our cells. This activates an immune response and trains our bodies to protect us against COVID-19. Getting vaccinated is vitally important to protect you. Get COVID19 Vaccine in Myerlee Pharmacy Clinic of Fort Myers, Florida

Things to Consider in a Safe and Successful Weight-loss Program

More than 70 percent of U.S. adults are overweight. Many of whom are trying to lose the extra pounds through different weight-loss programs. Successful weight loss requires long-term changes to eating habits and physical activity.

Weight Loss Facts

1. Your Body Works Against You

  • Weight loss decreases the hormone leptin, which signals the brain that it's full, and increases the hormone ghrelin, which stimulates hunger.
  • Drastic calorie cuts yield fat and muscle loss.

2 . There are No Quick Fixes

  • Since quick starvation diets can wreak havoc on metabolism, they damage long-term weight loss efforts.

3. Fad Diets Don't Work for Long

  • Grapefruit, Maple syrup, Cabbage, Apple-cider vinegar, Juice, and other “miracle” diets are supposed to melt pounds and trigger fat-burning.
  • The problem is, people typically lack the desire to eliminate entire food groups or severely limit caloric intake, so eventually a more inclusive, calorically dense way of eating returns.

4. One Diet Does Not Fit All

  • Everyone's body is unique, so the diet that works for your friend, coworker, or mother might not work for you.
  • When determining the best method to lose weight, consider your health, family history, metabolism, activity level, age, gender,  likes, and dislikes.

5. Cardio Is Essential

  • Don't skip the strength training, which supports joint health and function. Increased muscle mass slightly boosts metabolism.

6. It's Not a Diet, It's a Lifestyle Change

  • To lose weight and keep it off, changed behavior is required for the months and years to follow.
  • As your “diet” stops, the pounds you worked so hard to shed are likely to return.
  • To experience successful weight loss, make sustainable lifestyle changes.

Choosing a Safe and Successful Weight-Loss Program

A safe and successful weight-loss program includes flexibility, balance and activity.

  • Flexibility. A flexible plan doesn't forbid certain foods or food groups but instead includes a variety of foods from all the major food groups. A healthy diet includes vegetables and fruits, whole grains, low-fat dairy products, lean protein sources, and nuts and seeds.
  • Balance. Your plan should include adequate nutrients and calories. Eating large quantities of certain foods, such as grapefruit or meat; drastically cutting calories; or eliminating entire food groups, such as carbs, can cause nutritional problems.
  • Activity. Your plan should include physical activity. Exercise plus fewer calories boost weight loss and offer numerous health benefits including countering lost muscle mass that occurs with weight loss.

1.Consult a Doctor with Weight-Loss Efforts
Before starting a weight-loss program, talk to your doctor. Doctors review medical issues and medications that might affect weight and provide guidance. Do you have a health condition, such as diabetes, heart disease, or allergies?
2Consider Personal Needs
Consider personal preferences, lifestyle, and weight-loss goals. Do you prefer individual weight-loss programs or do you prefer support from a group?

3. Determine a Budget
Some weight-loss programs require the purchase of supplements or meals and visits to weight-loss clinics. Does the cost fit your budget?

4. Reflect on Past Diet Attempts
How did you feel physically and emotionally while on the diet?

  • The doctor's recommendation of lifestyle changes first to determine if a healthy weight can be attained. If these changes do not show to be effective, discuss if medication is the right path for you.
